For those of you still playing Diablo2 off and on, a new season of Ladder starts the 2nd of May, 2012! Don't worry, Blizzard has stated that it is NOT, I repeat, it is not the last ladder reset of D2, just because D3 is coming out:
See that, Other Game Companies? That's how you keep your customer base coming back for more... Thank you, Blue.
Heck there are still tens of thousands of players online and many more messing around on Single Player. I myself have recently been trying out The Cheat Engine on Single Player, but with the Hero Editor there is really no need, as you can give your character level 90+, level 90+ skills and max out your stash with goldz for gambling. Do a few Boss Runs, save the items as files, then you can import them into the other characters! I hope Diablo3 has this sort of thing... I don't want to sound like 'that forum guy/girl', but I may not purchase Diablo3 if it doesn't have Single Player. Even the annoying must-have-an-internet-connection Single Player is fine, as long as cheats and utilities are allowed for those of us who want to beef up our characters. [Must not... include rant about online single player games and them not working when servers/companies go down and how they should all be like Diablo2...]
Speaking of D3 (a separate post will be made about the beta), it seems like Gold and other things are all server-side. This makes sense, since D3 items are going to be able to be sold for "Real Life Money" and you don't want some hackers giving their characters a million goldz to sell for real cash. However, again, for those of us who like to supe-up our characters, the ability to have (built in?) cheats of some sort would be nice for isolated/offline single player gameplay. I purposely do not read/view too much on a game before it comes out and I haven't heard anything about Single Player in D3 and how it's going to be handled yet.
Distraction! This is a post about Diablo2, and so let's bring it back with some screenshots:
My Necro in NM Den. If you can change the game running from DirectDraw to DirectX, I highly recommend it.
The shading and colors are superior.
My Barbarian following in a Chaos and Baal Run in Nightmare. Yup, that's what I call the Necromancer Clay Golems.
My Hydra Sorceress running Hell Countess for Runes. My strategy was usually to teleport to her [I miss the old 3-level Tower] and then let the hydras kill her and her guards off. Pretty easy with decent Hydras. The one Hydra on me is for defence of the position.
Ahh! This is what happens when you don't play your characters for 90 Days and someone takes your name before you sign in again. Drat, I don't mind losing the item holders but she was a good sorc. Oh well, a chance to make new!
My 83 Wind Druid on Ladder. I was in the top 10 at the beginning, then stayed in the top 50 for a while, but I just can't keep playing and keep up. It was fun for a while anyway and I got some fast levels with good groups.
My Windy Druid found Ali Baba, woot! What's the best character to MF with these days?
Going through some items from Ladder on my Item Holders and found Warshrike, a nice throwing dagger weapon. Now where's my Throwing Barb again?
Found Jalal's Mane for my Bear Druid. Yesss!
My Bear Druid's Stun Strategy. Want easy PvM (player versus monster) fights? Just level a Druid to 24 and get Shockwave. Coupled with a nice strong Grizzly, just 'Stun-Em-And-Run-Em': Shockwave stun and let your merc and grizz clear em out. The only thing you have to worry about is what loot to pick up when it's all over.
My Necromancer can use Charged Bolt! Ok, he can't, but my Bonemancer entering Hell WSK looks like he does in this screenshot, due to some Lightning Enchantedseses-es near the Waypoint. Don't forget kids, if you hold the mouse farther away from your character when you cast Teeth, they will come out in a narrower cone, and if you hold the mouse closer to your character, they will come out in a wider spread.
A quarter of a million gold for dying? Man, I hope this doesn't happen in D3.. Ah, well it was about time for a break anyway..
That's it for now, see you in there!
N.B.: This post has been copy/pasted to a few blogs out there (that seem to mainly just copy/paste others' work). This is the original article (our logo is in the screenshots still and they left one of the copyright statement of ours intact). Please ask if you wish to copy/paste entire articles (thank you for the compliment I suppose) and it's great if you could just link to this one. Thanks, though.

Sometime around January/February, 2012:
Greetings all, TheTechnician here and I can honestly say that I have never played MW3 before in my life. This free weekend/demo of the game is my first time playing any other of the COD series besides the first, which I tried on a friend's PC back almost a decade ago, and even then, I only played a short while.
Three main things hit me right away after downloading the free/demo Steam version and starting it up. The first was the game/server matching system. I thought I was playing Left For Dead Joins The Army. Not that it is a bad thing, as most of the decisions were automated, but it was quite different than... oh let's pull a game out of the dark randomly here from hundreds of games... Battlefield3.
There was no huge server list to wade through, no filters to set, no options to play certain maps, no inviting friends to play on your maps with you (at least I didn't see these things at first, perhaps they were Unlockable, as most of the game seemed to be). Two comments about this: one, unlockables aren't bad. They are an attempt to keep people playing (their numbers are then high to submit to shareholders and industry press) and add a freshness to the game, as time goes on and there are 'new' things to find within playing the same game for a time; and two, simplicity isn't bad as well. I can see that this game was made more for Console players (let's try not to start THAT war now) from the beginning as the simplified matchmaking and server choices (no choices at all actually, that I saw at first) make for 'plug-it-in-and-get-a-drink-and-just-play' game starting, which isn't a bad thing either.
Coming from PC gaming (I have played consoles since PONG but only owned a couple such as the NES) it was quite a different feeling, not being able to set how many players I wanted to play with, what maps I wanted to try (if I wanted to limit it to one or two for a while to get used to them), and I can honestly say - as a PC Gamer remember - that I missed that. I felt my army-bootlaces were being tied together for me from the very start and to place a value judgement on it, I didn't really like that there were no lists of options that I could pick through to get the type of game exactly how I wanted. Perhaps I am 'spoiled' as part of The Master Race [according to Console vs PC wars] but to not have all those choices and be forced to play with a small group of people I didn't know in such an intimate (spatially and conceptually, not emotionally) way was.. uncomforting.
Small is the operative word now. Small as in a group of only 8 as in ONLY EIGHT people were present and the game started. That's it? Why didn't it wait longer (since it made me anyway, again no choice) and why only eight? Is that the minimum required to play? /gasp Is that the maximum?
The game started and I was thrust into warfare. I tried to switch weapons scrolling my mousewheel but couldn't. "Only one weapon?" I typed. Noone answered. I ran and sprinted but then I stopped sprinting for some reason. Is my keyboard dying? I'll have to troubleshoot that later... There must be more weapons as it definitely showed more than one thing on the screen at the start, what class did I pick again? I tried hitting some keys such as 'throw grenade' and "2" to switch weapons, ah there we are, feeling more comfortable now, things are getting learned. Wow, this game looks pretty good.
Yes, the game looked good. It was realistic. Nice shadows, detailed textures, this city map I was in looked great. I haven't watched any 'BF3 vs MW3' videos on YouChoob (I try not to watch much gameplay video before playing a game) but if they argure about detail and realism, I would say they are both very similar and both very good.
As I moved around, I felt a bit like I was 'floating' around, gliding on skates as opposed to ...oh I don't know ...some random game like.. Battlefield3. Don't get me wrong I am not complaining, it felt a lot smoother and I remembered right away how COD was based on the QuakeIII engine and when Medal of Honor and Battlefield1942 first came out, crossing over to those games [from Quake3] felt like I was running hip deep in water all the time. I don't know if MW3 is just a really-really-souped-up Quake3 engine, but the smoothness of movement reminded me of it, and it was nice.
***** TIME TRAVEL TO FREE WEEKEND APRIL 2012
That's where I stopped working on that post? Hmm.. well, from what I remember, it was a pretty fast-paced, action-packed couple of days. I only got to Rank 4 but was starting to learn the controls and the game. I even killed a few people.
My biggest complaint (other than what seemed like the odd never-miss person, I don't like to throw 'that word' for them around) was the scope of the play areas. If the limited number of players gave me a taste I didn't like at the beginning, the limited play space by the end left a lingering, bad aftertaste. Perhaps I am spoiled (am I really using this phrase again?) by the sheer size and huge number of players in BF3 games, but to be put into a little kennel of an area, usually what felt like five rooms together and some open spots (read: small spots with no rooves) was just plain... small. Perhaps it is the limited hardware in consoles holding back programming for any larger scope of gameplay, but whatever it is, you either like it and love the close-quarters action - or you don't, and feel that you were just thrown into a kennel with other dogs, all just itching to fight. At least, that's what I remember...
*****
Fast-forward to the April 2012 Free Weekend of MW3 and... I can't play it. Every time I start it through Steam, my computer reboots itself. Great, now what's the problem?
"Steam, verify the integrity of your cache."
"Yessir. All files successfully validated, sir."
"Understood.. hmmm."
Well, let's look at some forii and see if anyone else is having "mw3 crashes" or "mw3 reboots computer" problems... "Update your ****" well, thank you very much, I actually have the latest drivers, blahblahwait.. my BIOS. I didn't update that since I upgraded to my sex-core FX with Gigabyte Mainboard!
Ah, Gigabyte, the gimmick-laden utility-dropping wonder of a manufacturer. Although I will usually say "ASUS" when people ask what to get at the lunchtable, for dependability (Remember Kids, It's Pronounced 'ahh-suhs' As In 'Pegasus', Which The Company Is Named After (sounding more like us-us than ah-sus or the ear-tearing ay-soos)), I also heartily recommend Gigabyte. Feature-packing and ready-to-go, I easily find the Touch Bios utility at the website, which allows BIOS access within Windows and tell it to Automagically Update the BIOS with the latest version found over the internet at the manufacturer's website. Oh, it's done already?
REBOOT = SUCCESS
The game starts and I can begin to run around and die once more. What's this about Free Weekend = Hackers on the forum I saw? Bah.. too bad, but I'll still try to play some.. It looks like they are doing updates as the weekend goes even, updates are coming down the Steam pipe. [dude, steampipe, get it, dude]
So, for those having crashing issues with the April 2012 Free Weekend of MW3, after making sure all your drivers are up-to-date, update your BIOS through your manufacturer's instructions (will make a post on this in the future) and that should help.
See you in there!
[Screenshots and more to follow...]
Short versions of updating the motherboard bios from our Resident Techie:
For Gigabyte: install TouchBIOS, run it and update via the internet for the latest version straight from them.
For ASUS (and others): go to the company's website and find your mainboard through models/type/etc and in the Downloads section, download your board's BIOS, latest version. Install and run the manufacturer's update utility (usually on the disc, or dl it from the website) and tell it to update using the file that you downloaded from the company's website.
Reboot.
[Back in my day, we took up the phone line to put the handset on the cups and we put the bios updates onto floppies and booted to dos and ran a separate flash utility and prayed and gave scented offerings to the gods that nothing bad happened and we liked it, dagnabbit]

Who doesn't love Plants vs Zombies? The simple and easy to learn gameplay, the catchy full-of-character music, the simple yet pleasing graphics. With fun levels and achievements and mini-games to boot, it was destined to be a classic.

This past Christmas, Santa saw fit to put PvZ in my stocking and after completing the adventure levels and mini-games I wanted more. I wanted the feeling of wind rushing through my hair and hot sand under my feet while I sipped a drink out of a coconut. That's what you get when you use Cheat Engine: 'Anything You Want' (in a game)...
The Cheat Engine (by Dark Byte and many other contributors) and similar utilities have been around for a while and if you play games and program you probably tried one in the past. The basic way a utility like this works is:
Tell the program to look for a value in the game, let's say 25 Gold as an example.
Buy something and now let's say you have 23 Gold.
Tell the program to now look for all those 25's that have turned to 23 and it will find one or more "23"s.
Tell the program to change that 'new' 23 to 2500.
In the game, you now have 2500 Gold.
Sip coconut drink.
Programs like this are great because it's not limited to just 'gold'. It can work for almost any value in a game, such as ammunition for your gun, health, minerals, food, anything. It works on most games, even ones that don't have built-in cheats or have limitations like achievement-disabling (such as Starcraft2). It will work on these games and allow you to pretend to be an "Elite Haxor", Kobayashi Maru-ing your way through games [yes I use that as a verb] and getting achievements in games that wouldn't normally allow them after using cheat codes (such as Starcraft2 and others).
There are really only two things that would get in your way once you know how to do it. One is, some games have not just one 'spot' that has an amount you want to change, like Gold in our example, they will have multiple 'spots' that will hold the value you want to change. Usually you can just change all 6 or however many come up, but sometimes a game developer is 'tricky' and will use an algorithm instead - some formula that the game goes through to calculate how much you 'have' of something. When this happens, you will not find any results when looking for, in our example, "25" Gold. The other thing that can happen is that the values are not 'kept' on your system, but are only on the server that you are playing on ("Server Side"). This happens with most Massively Multiplayer Online Games (MMOs). In this case, you may not be able to 'inject' the value that you want for something (like Gold).
Note: In most Online games, especially MMOs where you play with/against other people, I do not suggest utilizing the "cheat utility" described in this article, as may present an unfair situation to others. I do not condone nor support "cheating" when the game is not a Single Player game (where it is done 'just for fun' and not affecting anyone else).
In Plants vs. Zombies however, it works great, and after 'finishing' the game, I used it to give myself the freedom of Unlimited Sun and a bunch of Money, so that I could buy more plants and grow The Tree Of Wisdom and finish up some Achievements I had missed as well. The Unlimited Sun was a lot of fun, cleaning up harder levels and it allowed me to try new setups and tactics.
And so, [although it would have probably been more helpful a few years ago lol] here is our Tutorial video on How To Get Unlimited Sun (Or Any Amount You Want) with Cheat Engine:

*** VIDEO REMOVED BY YOUTUBE FOR UNKNOWN REASONS OCT.2015 CURRENTLY UNDER INVESTIGATION (Update 2015-12: It appears that YouTube is taking movements towards "possibly deceptive" or "harmful"-type Videos and Information. It was suggested that the use of Tags such as 'Hack' or even 'Cheat' and similar terms, was the trigger for this removal. I will follow this up further and see if this is fully the case. I do not want to post something that YouTube finds Questionable, but I also wish to help gamers enjoy 'Cheats' or other additions to games, to their fullest extent ('doing whatever you want' in a video entertainment vein). Once I find a compromise between these two goals, I may update this video above. Until then, please use the Steps below to carry out this 'Cheat', if you desire.)
Here's a breakdown of the steps shown in the video:
Start a level in the game
Start Cheat Engine
After the level begins, pause the game and open the PlantsVsZombies process (.exe) in Cheat Engine by clicking the first button and choosing "popcapgame1.exe" and click Open
Enter the amount of Sun to look for (present value, 50)
(Optional, may need to be different for different games - set the Scan Type for "Exact Value" and set the Value Type for "4 Bytes")
Hit the First Scan button to begin scanning the game in memory for the value (50), multiple results are shown
Go back to the game and change the amount of sun (shown in the video as clicking on a dropping sun for +25 additional sun, making the sun amount now 75)
Pause the game and go back to Cheat Engine and change the Value from 50 (what it was) to 75 (what it is now) and hit the Next Scan button
One value results, which was the only thing to change from the old value (50) to the new value (75)
Click on the one result (75) anywhere on the line of the result and click the Red Arrow button to move it to the bottom area where we can work with it
Right-click the Value (75) and in the submenu select "Change Record" and click "Value"
Enter a new value (750 in the video)
(Optional, put a checkmark in the "Frozen" box, if you want the value to be 'locked' and never change (if possible))
Go back to the game and plant and use sun, it should stay 'locked' at 750 (if using the amount shown in the video)
If it isn't working for you, let us know and we'll help you out!
Note that in the video, we showed how to do everything side-by-side (so you could see what was happening and how to do it easily). It does not have to be set up in this way in order to use Cheat Engine, you can ALT+TAB out of a game and still do this with some value you want to set/lock in a game running in the background.
Have fun and see you in there!
[Personal Story: I remember playing a game quite a number of years ago that had the same concept as PvsZ. You were to 'defend a gate' by placing little turrets that shot dots at invading triangles and squares and depending on the placement of the turrets you chose (some shot missiles that did area-of-effect damage, etc) if too many invaders got by, you lost. I'm not saying that PvsZ ripped that game off (there were a lot of that type of game and since then) who knows, maybe the developers are the same ones that made that game that I enjoyed so many years ago...]

Some versions of the 1812 Overture have guns, some have cannons - this one has explosions.
I have played the Battlefield series since it's inception and I have always loved C4 and how the game handles it. Someone in BF2 called when you load a vehicle up and ghost ride it into the enemy 'Jihad Jeeps' and someone else called them 'Kamikaze Karz' and the other team usually calls them 'A Cheap Trick'. In any case, I have had tons of fun 'blowing things up good', whether it's chasing enemies down with a vehicle, running up behind them and planting some directly on their tank/plane/etc, or dropping a few down and laying in wait like some crazed-soldier-ninja-but-not-really - it's all a compliment towards a great aspect in the game that DICE has developed and the associated physics in their game engines.
I wanted to share some of these explosions from BF3 with you (to the tune of The Year 1812 Festival Overture in E flat major Op. 49 Finale, by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky) so I put together this short montage.

I haven't played SWTOR in a while and it was great to see when logging in that a patch installed a much-asked for anti-aliasing capability to the game engine (which came out only days after our post poking fun at it, but it was something asked for since Beta). Great job listening to your customers, devs!
To turn it on, simply open up the Preferences in SWTOR and under Graphics, it's a pulldown menu that allows Off, Low and High settings.
The HERO engine was said to not have this capability, so either they injected it, programmed it, or it must be a post-processing filter, similar to Skyrim's FXAA (Fast Approximate Anti-Aliasing) and BF3's Post Filtering, where the calculations (the detecting and blurring of the edges) isn't done at the drawing stage but afterward.
It works well:
Having now a set of good mid-range video cards, one NVIDIA and one AMD/ATi, I thought I'd see what the difference was in-game, when each was set to High.
Here is a short video showing the two side by side, in a short clip speaking with an NPC, and a pan and still shot of a FRAPS captured frame from the game:
There aren't really any big differences by the look of it, unless you really want to nit-pick. Both do a great job. Textures seem to be slightly crisper with ATi, slightly clearer, and NVIDIA seems to use higher-quality settings for AA from the get-go, just picking High makes it look great. I find with the newer ATi cards that forcing Higher Quality Anti-Aliasing (Supersampling, HQ A.I., etc.) results in a higher-quality picture overall versus the NVIDIA, using a GTX560 as a comparison against an HD6870. Again, both do a great job though - if you have those cards or higher the game is smooth as silk to play. Hopefully your video card can handle turning on Anti-Aliasing. If it can, things will run a little slower but the sometimes-distracting jaggies are heavily reduced with this great addition to the game.
To celebrate this new option from the developers and my upgrade of a monitor (Thanks, P!), I present a larger size Star Wars Loading Screen Desktop Wallpaper at 1920x1200, from us to you:

[currently this article is mostly point-form list, with no screenshots]
Hey all, Troy here and I am having pantloads of fun in Battlefield3, both in the Single-Player Campaign and in Multiplayer. At first however, even after a 4GB patch was downloaded upon installation, the game seems to take a bit of tweaking and fussing with to get working smoothly. Here is a point-form (I may add screenshots, etc later on) reference of many of the things I tried and learned about for BF3, getting it to work better/smoother. I also included some Gameplay Tips that I have come across already (which I would like to make into an instructional video sometime for you all).
Hopefully this will help some people out:
In some cases, it may help to change the process of the game (the game running in Windows/etc) to only use one core, for systems with 2+ core CPUs.
To change it in Windows for example, Right-Click on the Taskbar at the bottom and choose TaskManager. In the Task Manager, click on the Processes tab and then click on ImageName, which will organize the running processes by name. Right-Click on the BF3.EXE process and select SetAffinity... uncheck one of the CPU cores (0 or 1) and then click OK.
I personally found this slowed down the game a little, but it should provide stability for the game if it is crashing or stuttering (especially if the audio is stuttering)
You can always lower the Graphics Options within the game, but if putting them on LOW seems to make no difference, it may be your CPU that is limiting performance, not your Video Card (GPU).
One way to see how a couple aspects of your system is performing is to enable the in-game Performance Overlay. To enable it in the game, while playing, hit the Tilde key (~) which is usually next to the number one key on a standard english keyboard, then type:
render.perfoverlayvisible 1
(that's render-dot-perf-overlay-visible-space-one)
and you will see a graph being updated in the lower left of the game.
This is DICE's utility that basically shows the performance of your CPU (main engine/processor of your computer) and your GPU (video card main brain chip/processor), which are the two main components of a game being run and displayed on a computer system.
In this graph, the amount of time your CPU is taking to respond (it's efficiency in working) is shown in YELLOW, your GPU/videocard is shown in GREEN.
If the green is below the yellow, then your videocard is working more efficiently/faster than your processor.
If the yellow is below the green, then your processor is working more efficiently/faster than your videocard.
If either of them have spikes or jagged changes while updating the graph, they are waiting/processing too hard and this will cause framerate drops within the game.
In the game's Graphic Options, DEFERRED ANTIALIASING is basically 'regular' MSAA (Multisampling Antialiasing) and the POST ANTIALIASING is similar to FXAA (Fast Approximate Antialtiasing), seen in Bethseda's Skyrim/Elder Scrolls V, which is similar to AMD/ATi's MLAA (Morphological Antialiasing) option on their videocards. PostAA will tend to blur (that's how AA works) the overall screen as it quickly calculates/finds edges, whereas DeferredAA will take more time to calculate/find edges and will mainly blur only those areas. Deferred AA is more demanding (slower) than just using Post AA, both can be used at the same time if you wish.
If you attempt to join a server in Multiplayer, using EA's Battlelog web interface and it seems to just sit or be stuck on LOADING or JOINING, even though you have "Go To Game When Ready" checked: look on your Taskbar and if the game is there (BF3 icon) click on it and will bring up the full screen game and continue loading properly.
If you have an INTEL processor, disabling Hyperthreading may help with stuttering or slow performance (AMD does not have this problem as it does not 'fake' processors/cores)
Since this game is so demanding, I suggest if you are attempting to record gameplay videos (FRAPS, etc) to install the game to one drive and record to a second hard drive (this is a good setup to increase performance of gameplay while recording with any games).
Joining servers with higher ping will obviously have more lag/latency than servers with lower/green ping, but if you still experience lag/choppy gameplay on lowping/green servers, try servers with less players. Both the server CPU and your CPU must calculate and assist in drawing all those players, although it is far more dependent on the server not running more than it can handle (many try to force their servers to do so).
If the game is crashing or locking up, after making sure all your fans/cooling is working properly, consider not overclocking (if you are) or even underclocking, just to play BF3. This sounds counter-intuitive, but if you are having stability issues, work on your stability first (stopping crashes, etc) and one way to do that is to make sure things aren't overheating. If things start to run more stable and stop crashing/etc, then think about ways to speed things up after that. (This is of course one of many Last Resorts of having stability problems, as you probably want your system running as fast as you can get it)
When you are at the Battlelog, the Battlefield 3 web-based launcher and server browser, and it shows "SORRY, SOMETHING TECHNICAL WENT WRONG", just hit Refresh to reload the page, and it will work itself out. If you are blocking Scripting on the web, such as using Firefox and NoScript, allow Amazon's Web Services (amazonaws) and it should work fine.
Couple of quick tips:
DO NOT lay/crawl right next to walls/objects as you can poke through on the other side and players can see you if you move around on the spot. Even though you cannot be attacked through the wall/object, when hiding/moving against something, tap the key in the other direction once or twice so that you are not directly up against an object/wall so that you do not poke through and give your position away.
Lights and Lasers on guns can temporarily blind players but also basically tell them "SHOOT HERE"
Bullet Drop seems to be more pronounced than BFBC2
If you shoot all your rifle ammo at the enemy but they are still alive and reloading feels like it will take too long, quickly switch to your pistol and finish them off, then you'll have all the time you need to reload
Movement feels more like Medal Of Honor than it does Battlefield 1942 - a little more 'swimmy' than what is realistic. Learn your pace of movement, it will help you gauge whether you can make it across that street before the armor up ahead turns around to see you. If you know how fast you can run, you'll know to risk it or not. Also, if you have the Sprint upgrade, you can catch up to people from behind and knife them and take their tags.
Don't be scared to shoot at heli's (unless you don't want to give your position away) with a regular gun or pistol, you might get a kill as they fly by. I got 400 points in a few seconds at a flag because I stopped to help cap it while simultaneously Resupplying, Captured the Flag and Killed an Enemy that was flying overhead as a passenger in a chopper that I shot at (which also got a Defending Flag Bonus), all at once.
I see a lot of people asking about how to learn to fly or drive in multiplayer. An easy way to do this is to search in the Server Browser of the Battlelog for the term "1p" which is part of the name of servers that can start with just one player. Then, put a checkmark in the "Empty" filter. You will then get a list of empty servers that you can start on your own to learn the maps or learn to fly.
That's it for now, good luck getting it working better, stay positive and have fun!
Munenushi says: And Now, because I myself have seen so many Russian players (on the servers where I have been anyway) I present to you, this post: in Russian!
A while back, during an always-great-to-run-into Steam sale, I picked up Bully: Scholarship Edition (the name the Xbox, Wii and PC versions were released under). Being a fan of Rockstar games, I looked forward to what looked like post-GTA2 gameplay, even with the simplified-for-consoles low-polygon-count look to it:
James and Algernon [Flowers For Algernon?] settling up in the hallway a'la GTA Missions.
Yes it's a lot less money, but I think you are only fifteen in the game, after all
Saving money and time by not producing two separate versions of a game (for the PC and then the Console markets), many companies today are doing the reverse - producing games for the console market as a starting point (as they are easier to program for) and developing for the couple of de facto standards (as opposed to attempting to cover all the bases of getting things working and compatible for millions of different and changing combinations of hardware in the PC market as a starting point). Then, they simply develop and translate that game for PCs (game 'port'-ing, as in 'transporting' playability and marketability from one architecture to another). This process also allows for a game to retain a more simplistic engine, post-porting to PCs, so that it's marketability is wider (more older machines can run it = more customers buying the game). This is not the case with all games, but happens the majority of the time today to save time and money, and judging by the overall look of the game, it is the case with Bully.
James and his Biology teacher, Dr.Slawter [slaw-ter, get it? slaughter? or slot-her? umm nevermind]
Don't get me wrong, despite the pointy heads, cuboid (yes that's the correct term) fingers and overall boxy-ness of the console-focused game engine, Rockstar (Vancouver/Toronto/New England chapters) has obviously put a lot of love into the game. Making up for the low complexity of the models/meshes (and they seem to have even improved that slightly for PCs, judging by early console screenshots I have come across), things like detailed textures, varied model animations and other bits of attention to detail are everywhere. Papers fly by in the breeze and students make comments about their daily student/teenage life as you run by. Daylight levels change constantly, based on the hour of the day. There are weather changes as well:
Stand outside with no jacket on for a sec while I take this pic real quick to show it's Christmastime... Wow, it's almost New Year's!
Aspects like these have been seen in First Person Shooters before Rockstar Games existed, but Rockstar does them well and their presence is always appreciated by gamers. Rockstar's Low-Shelf (but then, Always-Accessible) humour is also present, with jokes like the Blue Balls Pool Hall. The game is rated for players 13 and up all over the world, so if you don't get that joke.. umm.. don't worry about it.
An example of the best gift you could give a teenager for Xmas
I try not to read too much about a game before I play it. A few trailers is fine, but I prefer to enjoy discovering everything for myself. One of the benefits of this occurred in this game, where I was pleasantly surprised to see classes (as in school curricula) present. I originally thought the entire game would be just Rockstar's typical open-ended, mission-based run-around gameplay. Talk to an NPC, do something. I completely forgot about the wonderful tidbits that are, Mini-Games.
Future Street Race 2165 arcade game. You only need to come in first place all 3 times!
In the adult versions of the other games (adult as in, being an older character in the game) playing videogames, billiards, darts and other such activities are Mini-Games that you can play in the settings Rockstar creates. Playing arcade games is still present and are nice little challenges, but the main mini-game aspect (so far in my gameplay) is the classes you must take. Pushing the right buttons in the right order for Chem class and drawing out an image a'la Qix for Art Class are examples of great interpretations of mini-games, are found in Bully, and are enjoyable reminders of the performance-based time spent in school days of yore [yikes, aging myself here hah].
Biology Class Tray or Cafeteria Tray?
One aspect I must quickly touch on before ending this post is regarding the music. In game, it is present constantly (not particularly a bad thing) and it is pretty catchy. Almost too catchy. I found myself remembering and imitating the music while I wasn't playing. I began to wonder why it was so darned memorable and analyzed it until I figured out why: it is memorable because it is so reminiscent of music of the past.
This is not a dig against Shawn Lee, I'm not saying he was plagaristic, or even derivative here. Perhaps tracks like Beach Rumble sounding like the Miami Vice Theme by Jan Hammer and the track Punishment sounding like Wrapped Around Your Finger by The Police are done in homage. It does seem fitting to utilize their themes for those specific settings in the game anyway. Either way, the music is enjoyable and seemed to fit in with the game well, such as sneaking around done to music that feels like 70's-era Detective Show background track.
And so, it is with this enjoyable game that I am starting a series for this blog I have entitled "Let's Play Without Talking"...
I came up with the idea of making these series of videos (each game will have it's own series/playlist of recordings) because I wanted a way to chronicle the gameplay and enjoyment of games I have - initially for myself to watch again sometime - but I thought that other people might enjoy watching them (especially if YouTube is any indication of such a thing). There seems to be a ton of Videogame Gameplay videos on YouTube today (as opposed to say, over a decade ago) but none have people just being quiet and playing.
These videos are technically not Tutorials or How To's, as I am not showing you what to do to complete the areas (heck I make mistakes in them, as it is generally my first time playing them (so you are literally watching my first time or at least my first time playing that game in a long time (a section of something may be re-recorded if there are technical problems)) and they are definitely not Speedruns or Time Attacks, as I am not trying to complete the game as fast as possible (I like to explore things but am not an Easter-Egg-Hunter either) - I am merely playing the game - and you can watch if you want.
Perhaps watch these while eating a meal or relaxing before bed, reminiscing of the game and the enjoyment you perhaps had with it in the past. It's like you have come over to my house (I made a couple dozen chicken wings for us) and you are literally Watching Me Play while you eat or something - and I don't talk while I play... [Technically, these could be classified as Walkthroughs, as I am showing you how to possibly do things, but as it is my first time playing the game, it is not in the most efficient way possible.. I make mistakes, some stupid, some funny.. and what is shown is only one path to take, one possibility and it is definitely not the absolute full experience of the game. I understand the helpfulness and entertainment value of commentating on videos, but originally searching on YouTube I did not find many game recordings where people would just shut up and play and let me watch the game and enjoy it that way, haha. Today, there are an increasing number of 'Let's Play' videos of just gameplay, and so I feel it is alright to share my experience of the game in the spirit of entertainment of others and not intentional copyright infringement (these types of videos will never be 'monetized' - it is even free advertising for the game and game companies - if you like the game material, buy their games and support them!) Remember fondly, or purchase to enjoy, these great games!]
To celebrate, I present this Desktop Background Wallpaper, adapted from an original Rockstar Bully Scholarship Edition Wallpaper, edited and retiled for Widescreen Monitors:
